This book was written as part of the observance of Richmond Academy’s 200th birthday. Not only is Richmond Academy the oldest educational institution in Georgia and one of the oldest in the United States, but its graduates over the years have made significant contributions in the fields of law, medicine, science, the arts, and literature not to mention assuming positions of leadership in education, business, politics and the military. In this sense, the school has more than fulfilled its stated purpose of educating young men and women for public life and service and no doubt will continue to do so in the future. Alethia E. Bigbie (Lee) Nowell is a native of Claxton, Georgia and served as Librarian and Media Specialist for Richmond Academy for over 17 years. This book, along with The University of Georgia and Richmond Academy and Trustees of the Town comprise her trilogy of Richmond Academy. She received her Masters of Education Degree from the University of Georgia.
